Will Your New Filling Be Direct, Semi Direct, or Indirect?

Most people have at least one filling, and these do need renewing every so often as the edges can begin to crumble, allowing the filling to leak, and let in decay causing bacteria. If you have regular dental check-ups with Dr David Brown then this will be one of the things he will be looking for, and is part of the reason why dental x-rays are taken periodically. When the time comes for the filling to be replaced then you may hear the dentist in Leeds talking about indirect, direct, or even semi direct fillings, but what do all these terms mean?

Dentist LeedsThey refer to the techniques used to place a filling, and the choice of filling is something that can depend on the size and location of the decayed area, and how much of your natural tooth structure is still remaining.

Direct Fillings
These are the most common type of fillings and are placed in one visit to Leeds City Dentalcare. Direct fillings are used to replace relatively small areas of tooth structure, and are perfect for small cavities. Composite resin is placed into the cavity, and is hardened using a special light that ‘cures’ the resin. Afterwards it will be shaped and polished. The result should be a very lifelike filling that is difficult to see. Your dentist can even chose to use small increments of several different colours of resin, giving even better results.

Semi-Direct Fillings
Semi-direct filings are used to replace larger areas of decay, and are good for filling relatively large cavities. The filling can be constructed in the same way as before, but its size means that it needs to be removed from the mouth so it can be cured or fully set. Once this has happened then it can be placed back in the mouth, and can be bonded in position.

CEREC Semi-Direct Fillings
Leeds City Dentalcare is also able to offer patients a different type of semi-direct filling that is far more beautiful, and which is extremely strong, as the practice has a CEREC machine.. This can mill semi-direct fillings from a single block of porcelain, and this is something that can be done while you wait. The advantage of CEREC fillings or inlays or onlays, is that they are very hard wearing, and can be made from a huge number of different shades of porcelain, and these also come in various translucencies.

This means if your filling is relatively large, then the final result should be a beautiful filling that has the natural liveliness and translucency of a real tooth, and which will blend in extremely well with your remaining tooth structure. Another advantage is that CEREC restorations will not stain, and will stay looking good for longer. CAD/CAM technology means they are precision made, so they will fit incredibly well.

Indirect Fillings
This technique is used to replace larger areas of tooth structure, where the decay is too extensive to simply place an ordinary composite resin filling. It may be possible for you to have a CEREC filling, or your Leeds dentist may decide to send an impression of your tooth to the dental laboratory for the filling to be custom-made. The filling can be made from porcelain, or from gold alloy.

Reasons for Considering Dental Implants to Stabilise Dentures

In spite of improvements in dental care, many people still wear full dentures, and many struggle with them. It can be easy to think problems with loose and ill-fitting dentures are inevitable, and as part of getting older, but it doesn’t have to be that way, as dental implants in Leeds can do much to help. The question of dental implants can often lead some people discounting them immediately as being too expensive or only worthwhile for younger people, when in fact this is not necessarily the truth.

Many older people have already discovered the benefits of having their dentures stabilised with dental implants, and this needn’t cost a fortune. A lower denture can be held firmly in position with relatively few implants, and the improvements to a person’s quality of life can be immeasurable.

Dental Implant LeedsAge is no Barrier to this Treatment

Using a few well-placed implants can make this treatment relatively affordable, and even if you are getting on in years don’t you deserve to enjoy your time to the full? Age is not a barrier to successful implant placement, and provided you are in good health, and do that have any major problems, then you may well be suitable for dental implant in Leeds.

Wave Goodbye to Messy Denture Adhesives

Perhaps you currently hold your dentures in place with adhesives? If so then you will already know that the cost can be quite expensive, and there are some concerns over the potential effects to health when these products are used in the longer term. Most denture adhesives contain zinc, and it is all too easy to ingest at least a little bit of this ingredient, but it has been associated with certain neurological disorders. This link may yet to be fully proven, but if you find yourself using dentures adhesives day in day out, then it may be worth discussing this with Dr David Brown or another of the dentist in Leeds City Dentalcare.

Even if you don’t want to have dental implants, there may be something else we can do to help you denture fit a little better. If you decide to go for dental implants, then of course you will no longer need to fiddle around with adhesives, and of course you will no longer need to spend money on denture adhesive.

Enjoy an Improved Quality of Life

While dental implants re often used to replace dentures completely, through the placement of a fixed bridge, or through the use of multiple implants to replace teeth, not everyone wants to have this treatment, and not everyone is suitable for it. In this case, using dental implants to hold a lower denture securely in position can be a very good solution, and doesn’t need to break the bank. This is something that is sometimes called an overdenture, and is most commonly used to secure lower dentures.

Treatment is minimally invasive while offering maximum benefits and value for money. The dental implants will help to reduce the rate of bone loss in the jaw, and can help to improve nutrition. Wearing full dentures often means having to forego many foods as they are too difficult to chew properly. This is far less of a problem with an implant supported denture, and provided of course that you choose healthy foods, you could see your general health improve.

Worst Foods for Staining Your Teeth after Whitening

Have you recently had your teeth whitened at Leeds City Dentalcare? They probably look great, but how can you keep them looking that way for as long as possible? Although they will gradually darken, there are various adjustments that you can make to your diet and lifestyle that could keep them looking brighter and whiter for longer. Certain foods and drinks are known to be particularly bad, and even making small changes could help your pearly whites stay that way for a little longer.

The worst offenders include:

Cosmetic Dentistry Leeds

  • Black coffee or tea, and just adding milk to dilute the strength can help to lessen the staining effects.
  • Red and white wine will stain your teeth. This might come as a surprise as although red wine is well known for staining teeth, white wine is often regarded as being safe. White wine can be bad for your teeth as it is very acidic, and will soften your tooth enamel, increasing its susceptibility towards staining, especially if you enjoy a glass of white wine, followed by something highly coloured.
  • Sports drinks and fizzy drinks are also very acidic, and will increase the risk of other foods being able to penetrate your tooth enamel.
  • Berries such as blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and blackcurrants are well-known for being part of a healthy diet, but they are not loved by your teeth. If you do enjoy a bowlful of berries then try to rinse out your mouth with water afterwards, as this will at least rinse away some of the remains, and will reduce the acidity in your mouth.
  • Coloured sauces such as soy sauce and tomato sauce are able to stain your teeth, so are best enjoyed as part of a main meal, and once again be sure to drink plenty of water to wash away any particles that may have stuck to your teeth.
  • Salad dressings containing balsamic vinegar, or dipping your bread in this vinegar and olive oil will increase the rate of tooth staining. Interestingly balsamic vinegar is better enjoyed on a salad, as lettuce does leave a protective film over your teeth which will at least help to prevent some of the staining.
  • Fruit juices, in particular those that are very highly pigmented, such as cranberry or pomegranate, can cause staining, not least because they are also very acidic. The best way to enjoy these healthy drinks is through a straw, as this will minimise the contact they have with your teeth.
  • Sucking sweets all day will rot your teeth, but may also stain them. Next time you eat your favourite sweet take a look at your tongue in the mirror. If it has stained your tongue then it will almost certainly do the same to your teeth.
  • Chicken Tikka Masala may be a national dish, but that tasty sauce won’t do much for the colour of your teeth. Considering how notoriously hard it can be to remove curry stains from clothes, it is hardly surprising that it will colour your teeth.

In general, if you spill food or drink down a white shirt, and it leaves a nasty stain, then it is likely to be doing the same to your teeth. The good news is that Dr David Brown, or any our dentist in Leeds, will be able to prescribe additional whitening gel for use in your home whitening trays, as the results can be topped up every so often.

Today’s Porcelain Veneers Are Stronger and More Beautiful Than Ever before

Are you thinking about freshening up your smile this autumn? If so you might have thought about having porcelain veneers, as these are one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry in Leeds. They’ve become even more beautiful in recent years due to advances in dental technology. Nowadays the materials are stronger and more lifelike, and the dentists and technicians producing them have often undergone intensive training in cosmetic dentistry techniques. Leeds City Dental care is no exception, as the dentists in our surgery will work with you to make sure you’re satisfied with your new smile, but what exactly is a porcelain veneer?

Dentist LeedsA porcelain veneer is best described as being an extremely thin piece of porcelain that literally veneers or covers the front of your tooth. It’s custom-made to exactly fit over your tooth and his consort in such a way as to improve on it the natural appearance of your teeth. It’s usually necessary to remove a little bit of your tooth structure, but this isn’t always required depending on the size of the tooth to be veneered compared with the desired shape and size of the tooth.

Veneers can it help improve several different characteristics of your teeth including:

Colour
Multiple veneers are often used to change the colour of teeth, as teeth can gradually yellow as you get older. While teeth whitening is effective for some staining, it won’t work all the time as some stains are internal to the structure of the tooth. A porcelain veneer can be used to mask the natural colour of the tooth, making it whiter and brighter.

Shape and Size
Over the course of time teeth can become worn down, making the incisal or biting edges appear flatter. In comparison useful teeth have softer, rounded edges, and replicating these with veneers can help give you a more youthful smile. Rounded softer teeth went since everybody, as some people may prefer to have square and more masculine teeth. The simple things that can be discussed during the planning process with Dr David Brown. Some people simply have teeth that are too small for their mouth, or maybe the size and in this case the size can be adjusted with veneers. Sometimes tooth structure has been lost due to decay or trauma, and this may be able to be repaired with a veneer or it might be better to choose a crown.

Spaces and Alignment
Most people have at least one or two teeth that are slightly crooked or out of alignment, and this is something that can be corrected through using veneers. It’s a quicker fix than wearing orthodontic braces for months on end, as not everyone wants to take this route. Quite a few people will have gaps in between their teeth, and while these can add to character they can also be highly inconvenient, and it could be that a person’s smile will look better with the gaps closed or at least minimized.

Porcelain veneers are incredibly versatile, and Leeds City Dental care has a small gallery on its website showing real patients who have benefited from this treatment. If you’re interested in finding out more than it’s worth booking at consultation with a dentist in Leeds to find out more.

Still Smoking? Your Oral Health Is a Great Reason to Quit

Recent figures released by the Health and Social Care Information Center show that more than 1.6 million people were admitted to hospital due to problems caused by smoking, and cancer accounted for 11% of this total. Apparently the number of young people smoking is now higher than the number of adults who still smoke at 23% compared to 20%. Even though the number of smokers has fallen over in recent years, the incidences of mouth cancer have risen considerably over the last decade, by almost 50%. This recent increase in the number of people being admitted to hospital due to problems created by smoking seems to indicate that this upward trend is set to continue for at least the near future. Some 18 people are diagnosed with mouth cancer each day in the UK, and it now affects more than 6500 people. The condition is often caused by smoking and tobacco use. The figures are even more worrying if you happen to smoke and drink to excess, as you are up to 30 times more likely to develop mouth cancer.

Mouth Cancer Action Month takes place this November

Dentist LeedsWe’re coming up to Mouth Cancer Action Month which takes place in November, and if you’re thinking about quitting then now could be a good time to plan to do so, as is estimated two out of three smokers would prefer to kick the habit. If you’re not quite ready to do so, then don’t forget to have regular checkups at Leeds City Dental care as screening for mouth cancer is an important part of your preventative dental care regime, and is something that carried out as standard. Dr David Brown or another dentist in Leeds will carefully check all your oral tissues, and this includes your tongue, the inside of your cheek, underneath your tongue, and the roof of your mouth. In addition, you can help yourself by checking these tissues once a month for any signs of abnormalities. This could be a change in the colour of the tissues, or noticing you has a sore spot that fails to heal within a couple of weeks, or that an area feels slightly rough or thickened to the touch.

Reduce Your Risk of Gum Disease through Quitting Smoking

In fact smoking does nothing for your oral health; as well as increasing the risk of oral cancer, it also increases the likelihood that you’ll develop gum disease or at the very least your teeth will become stained with nicotine. If you have already lost teeth and are thinking about having dental implants in Leeds, then you’ll almost certainly be told you need to quit smoking before and. This is because the habit affects the way your gum tissues heal, as your body is less able to deliver essential nutrients and vitamins to the damaged tissues because smoking constricts the blood vessels. There’s very little to recommend smoking when you think about it, as is also well known for causing bad breath, and as there are so few places where you can actually smoke these days you might find it easier just to give up completely. If you’re finding it difficult, then sit down and do a few quick calculations as to how much you spent each week, month or year as it might surprise you. It could be enough to pay for that dream holiday, or maybe a quick smile makeover Leeds City Dental care to help rejuvenate your newly healthy mouth.

Whitening Your Teeth Safely at Leeds City Dentalcare

Teeth whitening has to be one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments available today, but many people underestimate the strength of the whitening gels used, and they also tend to forget that this is a dental treatment. A new website launched recently aims to protect the public from harmful and illegal teeth whitening. The website is www.safetoothwhitening.org and its aim is to educate the public on how to achieve whiter teeth in a manner that is safe and legal. It also allows people to report those non-dental professionals who are carrying out teeth whitening illegally. Anyone who finds teeth whitening products containing more than 0.1% peroxide being sold by anyone other than the dental professional can also report this. An Internet company was recently prosecuted for selling peroxide-based teeth whitening products that were up to 30 times the permitted strength.

Dentist LeedsThe website has been set up by leading dental bodies who are concerned that teeth whitening treatments are still being promoted and sold illegally. Since October last year, whitening products containing or releasing between 0.1% and 6% hygiene peroxide can only be sold by a registered dental professional. In addition the first application has to be carried out under a dentist’s supervision in the surgery.

Teeth whitening is a Dental Procedure

Teeth whitening is a dental procedure, and if you care about your teeth then it’s best to visit Leeds City Dental care for a full consultation before using any type of whitening product whatsoever. Dr David Brown, or any of our dentists will be able to tell you if it’s safe for you to bleach your teeth. We will only recommend this treatment if we’re absolutely sure it’s right for you. When carried out by a dental professional, teeth whitening is completely safe and very effective, but when carried out illegally it could damage your teeth and gums permanently. It’s simply not worth the risk, especially as teeth whitening treatments offered by your dentist in Leeds are far more affordable than you might imagine.

Leeds City Dentalcare Uses a Gentle Whitening System

Leeds City Dental care uses a very gentle whitening system that utilizes teeth whitening trays that can be left in for several hours or overnight. The process will gradually restore your teeth to a natural white colour, and this is something that usually takes a couple of weeks. Once you have your custom-made whitening trays, then provided you look after them they can be reused periodically to touch up your smile, as our needs surgery will prescribe the appropriate whitening gel for your needs. The exact strength will take into account any tooth sensitivity, and the degree of whitening required.

This is far safer than putting your teeth and gums and risk by purchasing a kit online. It might seem cheap, but any whitening trays are unlikely to fit well and you could find the bleaching gel leaks out onto your gums, at the very least this will cause irritation. Choosing a gel that’s too strong for your needs will not result in beautifully white teeth, but could mean you end up over bleaching your teeth so they end up grey or they may even appear almost translucent. Either way it won’t be the result you’re looking for, and it’s highly likely that you’ll damage your teeth in the process.

Do You Know What’s in Your Toothpaste?

Just about everyone knows it’s necessary to brush your teeth twice a day, as this helps to remove the plaque bio film that builds up, and which would otherwise increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Most of us also brush our teeth before going out for a big night, or when we’re planning to meet up with someone special. Many of us continue using the same brand of toothpaste without giving it much thought. But what’s exactly in it, and what do all the ingredients do to help keep your mouth clean and healthy?

Dentist LeedsIn fact toothpastes can really be quite complicated these days, as they can claim to do a number of different things such as reduce the prevalence of tartar, reduce tooth sensitivity, or even to whiten your teeth.

Don’t Choose Toothpaste That Is Too Abrasive
Many types of toothpaste contain abrasives, as this helps to make the mechanical action of brushing more effective. This is something that has been going on for thousands of years, as the ancient Egyptians used an unpleasant mixture of burnt eggshells, pumice and ashes from ox hooves. We were little better, as it was only back in the 18th century that Britons were using brick dust as one of the ingredients in toothpaste recipes.

Nowadays toothpastes are much kinder to teeth as we now understand the importance of cleaning our teeth while still preserving tooth enamel, and they tend to contain ingredients such as silica or alumina. In fact toothpastes are tested to see exactly how abrasive they are, and are given a RDA (radioactive dentine abrasion) figure, although this can be quite difficult to find out. It’s well worth choosing one with a low RDA of less than 100, as some of the whitening toothpastes can be quite abrasive.

Do Whitening Toothpastes Work?
Whitening toothpaste can help to lift the shade of your teeth by a certain amount, but most will only contain mild abrasives and will not whiten your teeth beyond their natural shade. If whitening your teeth is important to you, then ask our Dentist in Leeds how to do it safely and effectively.

Do Pick One for Sensitive Teeth, If This Is a Problem for You
If you suffer from tooth sensitivity, then it can be well worth choosing toothpaste designed to help alleviate this problem. These toothpastes can be quite effective, but you do need to make sure you use them consistently for several weeks for the full effects to materialise. This is because they tend to work by blocking up the tiny tubules in your dentine. Your dentine can be exposed if your tooth enamel is particularly thin, or if it has worn away in certain areas of your teeth. It increases sensitivity as the tubules in the dentine lead directly to the pulp which is the central part of the tooth containing the nerves.

If you do have to sensitivity and haven’t had a check-up in a while, then it’s well worth booking an appointment to see Dr David Brown or another dentist in Leeds City Dental care. This is just to make sure that you do not have any areas of decay, or any signs of gum recession that could indicate disease. If you do then these might require treatment, and it’s much more effective to get it done as soon as possible.

New Study Provides yet Another Good Reason to Floss Every Night

Did you floss your teeth last night? Unfortunately we know the answer for many people will still be no, and this is in spite of numerous studies that have shown the importance of doing so. Flossing is vital for removing plaque and food particles that can become trapped in between your teeth, and it’s really the only way to reach these areas that are inaccessible by a toothbrush. We know it’s not fun, and it can seem like a real chore at the end of the day, but it is worthwhile doing so as otherwise you’re much more at risk of developing gum disease.

Dentist LeedsGum disease has been linked to numerous other diseases, and just recently to independent studies carried out in the US has revealed that a certain type of bacteria associated with gum disease could increase the risk of colorectal cancer. This is the second most common form of cancer in the world, and it’s more prevalent in developed countries. In the past scientists have studied mice, and found that bacteria in the gut, which can include species found in the mouth, could promote the development of colon cancer. Over the past two years studies have looked at biopsies from human colons, and have found that a particular microbe called Fusobacterium in healthy tissue right next to colorectal cancer. This particular bacterium begins life in the mouth, and is often associated with gum disease. However these early investigations didn’t discover any evidence of this bacterium in the tumours. As a result scientists carried out new studies to look at earlier indications of colon cancer, and interestingly they found the bacterium in the beginnings of tumours. Although these tumours may start off as benign, they are often a precursor of colorectal cancer and can become malignant.

Research is now on-going to prevent Fusobacterium from growing, and this could help treatments for oral diseases and for colon cancer. In the meantime it is necessary to floss daily, even if you hate doing it. This is something that we can help you with, so if you find flossing painful or even merely uncomfortable then ask our dentist in Leeds City Dentalcare for help.

Hate Flossing? It’s Worth Persevering

We have lots of techniques to make this job easier and far more effective, and if you really can’t get on with dental floss then think about trying an alternative method of cleaning in between your teeth. Next time you’re in your local chemists take a look in the oral care section, and you’ll probably see a variety of different interdental brushes that come in different widths, and some have angled handles. These are designed to fit in between your teeth, and can clean these areas extremely effectively. Alternatively you may want to think about splashing out on your dental care with the purchase of an electric air or water flosser. This device is perfect if you have limited use of your hands, or if you don’t have too much manual dexterity. These devices can also get the job done relatively quickly and very effectively.

Some people think it’s not worth flossing, and that simply brushing your teeth is enough. This fails to take into account that the contact areas in between your teeth represent approximately one third of all your tooth surfaces. In addition, Dr David Brown and all the dentists in our Leeds surgery can always tell the people who floss and the people who don’t, as their gums are likely to be significantly healthier.

Need a New Tooth in a Hurry? Leeds City Dentalcare Provides CEREC Crowns

It can be difficult to find time to visit the dentist, but failing to keep up with regular check-ups can increase the risk of dental emergencies, such as that sickening crunch when you bite into something hard or particularly chewy. You can guarantee that this will happen just before you are due to go on holiday, or right before a long awaited event. You experience that sinking feeling as you realise you will be stuck with a temporary crown or filling while your real crown is being made for you, something that can take two weeks or even longer to complete. But we may be able to help, as Leeds City Dentalcare has its very own CEREC machine right on the premises.

Dentist LeedsThis amazing piece of technology can create beautiful precision fitting crowns, inlays and onlays in just one easy visit to our Leeds surgery. We could be able to mend your tooth, and will have you on your way before you know it. So what is CEREC? A CEREC restoration is milled from a single block of porcelain that has been closely matched to your natural tooth shade. These blocks come in a huge variety of shades, and some are even more translucent than others (if you look at your teeth and compare them to another person’s you will see that the tips of the teeth can often appear to be more translucent, or transparent in some people compared to others).

The process is very straightforward. Dr David Brown will prepare your tooth in exactly the same way as he would for a normal crown or other restoration. From then on things are a little different. You would normally have to have an impression taken of your prepared tooth, and the impression would then be sent off to the dental laboratory. With a CEREC crown your dentist in Leeds will scan your tooth using a miniature infra-red camera, so there is no need to endure the feel of an impression tray in your mouth.  The information collected by the camera is used to create a 3-D image of your restoration, and once your dentist is happy with the design it is transmitted to the milling machine. This machine is very quick and accurate, so your new crown will be made within a very short period. The final step is to finish and characterise the crown so it looks exactly like your natural tooth.

We find our patients really love these restorations, as there is no need for temporaries, and no need for a second appointment. We like them because they are very good for teeth, as the minimum amount of tooth material needs to be removed in preparation for a CEREC crown. The material also behaves in a way that is quite similar to natural teeth, but is extremely strong and hardwearing.

Do we recommend CEREC crowns over conventional crowns? Not always, as sometimes there are certain situations when your crown is best made by a human rather than a machine; our technicians have years of experience in creating beautiful custom crowns that can give you a smile as individual as your personality. However they are excellent when you really need a gorgeous new tooth in a hurry.

Why is it Important to Mend that Chipped Tooth?

Do you have a chipped or cracked tooth that you have somehow just got used to seeing in the mirror? Many people have, and think that as long as it isn’t causing any pain, then there is no need to take action, as after all it is only a cosmetic thing, isn’t it? Partly, but not mending that tooth could mean it becomes more damaged over time, and eventually it could require more extensive treatment at Leeds City Dentalcare.

Dentist LeedsAnything that damages or removes some of the outer layer of enamel will leave your tooth more vulnerable, as bacteria in your mouth will be able to eat away at the softer layer of dentine, causing decay. If the decay is not treated then these bacteria could reach the pulp of your tooth, which is right in the centre, infecting and killing it. If this happens then you’ll need to see Dr David Brown for root canal treatment. Your tooth doesn’t actually need the pulp to survive, as it can function perfectly well without it, but you’ll still require treatment that could easily have been avoided.

Mending Chipped Teeth
The easiest way to mend a chipped to tooth is to bond it. This is where the missing portion of the tooth is built up with composite resin, and is shaped and polished to look just like your natural teeth. This is quick and simple to do, and will require just one visit to Leeds City Dentalcare. Composite does stain after a few years, so you will probably need to have any bonded areas renewed every three years or so.

Another way is to have a dental veneer. This is a little more complex, and will require more than one visit to our Leeds surgery. One of our dentists will need to shape your tooth so a very thin piece of porcelain can be constructed to fit over the remaining tooth. This is custom made for you, so it does take a couple of weeks or so to make. Once it is ready, you will be able to return to our Leeds surgery for fitting, and once our dentist in Leeds is happy with the finish, they will permanently cement it in place. Veneers usually last up to ten years before they need replacing, but this does largely depend on how well-cared for they are!

If you have larger areas of tooth missing then you may need to have it crowned. A crown fits over the entire tooth, so none of the natural tooth will be visible. Your dental crown can be made from a metal alloy that is then covered over with porcelain, or if your tooth is right in the front you may want to have an all ceramic crown which doesn’t contain any metal and this is good for anyone who wants the very best cosmetic results.

Whichever method you choose, you can be sure the end result will be a tooth that is restored to full function, and which can look exactly like your remaining teeth. If you are in a rush to get your chipped tooth fixed, then ask us about CEREC. This is a high-tech restoration that we can make on our premises, and which is milled from a single block of porcelain. The huge advantage of this treatment is that it can be completed in just one visit.
