Plan Ahead for Cosmetic Dentistry Treatments

Are you considering having a smile makeover in the next few months, perhaps for a special event? If so it might be worthy booking a consultation with Dr David Brown or another of our dentist in Leeds to find out exactly what will be involved. You’ll get the chance to discuss your smile requirements with your dentist and can find out exactly what is realistically possible as well as how much treatment will cost. Your dentist will also provide you with a written treatment plan that gives you a breakdown of all the costs involved. This could allow you to spread treatment over a longer period of time so you can save up a bit if necessary. It’s also quite easy to underestimate the amount of time required to complete a comprehensive smile makeover.

Cosmetic Dentistry LeedsSome Treatments Take Longer than Others

If you intend to have quite a bit of work done on your smile then it’s worth bearing in mind that even the planning process can take quite a bit of time as it’s important to make sure this first step is absolutely right. Some treatments, such as dental implants take several months to complete, and the process might be even longer if you require bone grafts prior to implant surgery. Having a bone graft is a straightforward procedure, and it’s something that can sometimes be done at the same time as implant surgery, but otherwise it might be necessary to complete it as a separate procedure prior to having your dental implants inserted. It’s something that is necessary if you have lost a substantial amount of bone from your jaw, for instance if you lost your teeth quite some time ago.

Having a dental implant allows your cosmetic dentist in Leeds to optimally place the implant in a position where it will function properly and will provide great aesthetic results. A conventional dental implant takes between three and six months to place, and having a bone graft could add several months to the process. Sometimes it may be possible to place implants that can be loaded with a crown, bridge or denture more quickly, but even so the first restorations are likely to be temporary while the implant sites settle down at this allows the implant post to integrate fully with your jawbone.

Other treatments such as dental veneers, crowns and bridges can be completed much more quickly with just a few visits to Leeds City Dentalcare spread over a few weeks. Popular treatments such as teeth whitening are also very quick, especially as you can complete the process at home. If you require dentures then you may need to visit our surgery quite a few times in order to have specific impressions and measurements taken of your face. These are all extremely important to make sure your new denture restores the correct dimensions to your facial features, so it provides the very best cosmetic dentistry in Leeds.

Making sure you allow time for all your cosmetic dental treatments to be completed helps to make sure the process is far less stressful. It also helps to ensure that we have plenty of time to perfect your smile prior to your big event. It gives you time to get used to your new smile and in addition allows plenty of time for all your restorations to settle down.

Have the Shorter Days Left You Feeling Blue? Cosmetic Dentistry Could Put a Smile on Your Face

If the onset of autumn has left you feeling down in the dumps, especially after such a great summer, then you may be looking for ways to lift your spirits. One thing that might help is asking your cosmetic dentist in Leeds about ways of improving your smile, and it could be cheaper than you imagine.

Cosmetic Dentistry LeedsThere are lots of things that can be done that are particularly expensive, and some will also help to improve your oral health. For instance if you haven’t visited Leeds City Dentalcare for a while then why not book a checkup and professional cleaning? This should be part of your preventative dental care regime, and having your teeth professionally cleaned will almost certainly leave them looking a little whiter than before. It’s an easy way to put a sparkle back in your smile. This is because the process does remove some of the surface stains from your teeth, and it’s also good to get a clean bill of health from Dr David Brown or another of our dentists in Leeds.

Renewing Old Fillings

During your check-up your dentist in Leeds will also assess the state of any fillings as these do need renewing every few years. This is an excellent preventative dental care treatment, but it can also help to boost your smile. Tooth coloured composite resin fillings become stained and discoloured after a few years, so having them renewed is an easy and affordable way to help improve your smile. If you still have any amalgam fillings in your mouth then you may wish to replace them with more modern composite resin fillings. Amalgam fillings used to be placed as standard in the back teeth as they are very strong and durable, but they’re not exactly pretty. If you’re still dissatisfied with the colour of your teeth then there are various ways we can help.

Teeth Whitening in Leeds

It is a nice time of year to whiten your teeth, and Leeds City Dentalcare can provide you with custom-made whitening trays that you can use at home. These gently help to lift the stains from your teeth, restoring them to a more pleasing colour. The great thing about having your teeth professionally whitened is that you can be sure you’re doing it safely and that it is not harming your teeth and gums in any way. You’ll also achieve the very best results.

Dental Veneers in Leeds

Teeth whitening is great, but bleaching can’t remove internal stains from the teeth. In this case your dentist in Leeds may advise whitening your teeth in another way, and one of the easiest ways to do so is to simply have the tooth veneered. This is also an excellent choice if you’re unhappy with the shape of some of your teeth, or perhaps they have some minor chips or cracks that need repairing. Dental veneers can be placed in just two or three visits, and even having one or two can make a considerable difference to your smile, especially if you have your teeth whitened beforehand.

There are lots of things in cosmetic dentistry in Leeds can do to help improve your smile so if you’re interested then it’s worth booking a consultation to see exactly what can be done.

Is Fluoridated Water a Good Thing?

Adding fluoride to the public water supplies is something of a contentious issue. Its addition to drinking water in the US has been hailed by many as being hugely successful in improving oral health. While this is something that has been done quite routinely in many parts of the United States for the past sixty years, it is quite a different story in England. Here some ninety percent of the population does not have access to fluoridated drinking water. In spite of this, most toothpaste contains fluoride, and your dentist in Leeds will always provide you with additional fluoride treatments if they think it is necessary.

Cosmetic Dentistry LeedsA recent survey found that nearly 80% of the population would support the addition of fluoride to public water supplies, and the possible addition of fluoride is seen by Dr Nigel Carter OBE, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, as being a positive thing. It is true that whenever it is added to drinking water the levels are very carefully monitored to ensure it is completely safe. But why is fluoride so good for dental health?

Fluoride Helps to Protect Teeth against Decay

Fluoride is a mineral that is found naturally in certain foods, and in some water. It is useful in helping to protect teeth against decay, as it helps to harden the tooth enamel. Tooth enamel is the hard outer layer of tooth that helps to protect the much softer layers of tooth that lie directly beneath it. Every day your tooth enamel is subjected to acidic attack, and this is something that softens the enamel and which leaches out some of the essential minerals in the enamel, including calcium and phosphate. The process is called de-mineralisation, and it happens every time you eat or drink something that contains high amounts of sugar, carbohydrates, or which is naturally acidic such as citrus fruits. As the tooth enamel softens, it becomes more prone towards developing cavities and lesions.

Fluoride helps to re-harden tooth enamel, speeding up a process called re-mineralisation. This is where the mouth begins to become less acidic as saliva helps to dilute the acids, and is also where some of the minerals leached out of the enamel are re-deposited, helping to harden the enamel.

If Dr David Brown, or another Leeds dentist, thinks you may be more at risk of tooth decay then they may recommend additional fluoride. This is something that can be applied to the teeth as a varnish, or through using trays that are left in the mouth for five minutes or so. They may also recommend the use of fluoride mouthwash, in addition to using fluoridated toothpaste. People who may be at increased risk of tooth decay include those with dry mouth, as well as people on certain medications such as drugs for high blood pressure, anxiety or depressions. People who have received radiation treatment for head and neck cancers are more prone to tooth decay.

Even though fluoride is a good thing, exposure to excess fluoride while the adult teeth are still developing, can lead to a condition called fluorosis. This creates white or brown stains on the teeth that can sometimes look unsightly, and which may require the attention of a cosmetic dentistry in Leeds. Overexposure to fluoride tends to occur if you lived in an area with naturally fluoridated water as a child and is caused by the fluoride being ingested rather than applied topically.

Cosmetic Dentistry in Leeds Can Make Your Teeth Look Great, but What Things Could Harm Your Smile?

If you’ve recently had cosmetic dentistry in Leeds then you’ll want to keep your smile looking is sparking as possible. An important part of this is visiting Leeds City Dentalcare at regular intervals for check-ups and cleanings, as well as brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. However there are other factors that can affect your dental health and these include:

  • Cosmetic Dentistry LeedsSports Drinks. If you like to work out then you may be in the habit of having a sports drink to top up on vital fluids, but although these drinks are increasingly popular, they’re not very good for your teeth. It’s been found that many are quite acidic, and could wear away your tooth enamel. In addition these drinks can contain high amounts of sugar that are the ideal food for bacteria that will produce acid as a by-product, increasing the chance of tooth decay.
  • Citrus Fruits. Citrus fruits are well known for containing high levels of vitamins C, something that’s generally considered healthy. However they also contain citric acid which can erode your tooth enamel, increasing the risk of cavities. If you enjoy a nice juicy orange than it’s worth rinsing your mouth with water afterwards or chewing sugar-free gum that contains xylitol, as this ingredient can help to inhibit bacteria that cause cavities.
  • Teeth Grinding. Teeth grinding or bruxism can do a tremendous amount of damage to your smile, and is something that often occurs at night making it difficult to detect. Teeth grinding can wear down the teeth and can also affect the gums. This is something that Dr David Brown or our dentist in Leeds can help you with through prescribing a custom-made mouthguard to wear at night.
  • Wine. Many of us like to enjoy a glass of wine, but regular consumption could damage your tooth enamel as wine can be quite acidic. This applies to both white and red wine, and both can increase the rate of tooth staining.
  • Dry Mouth or Xerostomia. This is a condition caused by insufficient saliva, and it’s another thing that can be very harmful for your teeth and gums. Saliva helps to keep your mouth clean and hygienic, washing away excess bacteria and helping to neutralise acids. If you do have dry mouth then there are several things you can do, including making sure you drink plenty of water, chewing sugar-free gum to stimulate the production of saliva, or using an artificial saliva substitute.
  • Overusing Teeth Whitening Products. If you choose to have your teeth whitened at Leeds City Dentalcare then we will give you plenty of advice on how often you can touch up the results. It’s important to follow this advice closely, as over bleaching your teeth could increase tooth sensitivity, and after a certain point they probably went to anything to help bleach your teeth.
  • Poor Diet. Your diet does affect your teeth, so if you’re watching what you eat make sure you’re getting plenty of vitamins and minerals necessary to keep your smile healthy. Your diet should contain adequate amounts of vitamins C, protein, calcium, B vitamins and folic acid.

Taking care of your smile will help you get the most out of your cosmetic dentistry in Leeds, and will help ensure the results last as long as possible.

The Party Season Is Just around the Corner, so Could Cosmetic Dentistry in Leeds Help Brighten Your Smile?

The end of 2013 is the fast coming into sight and with it the endless round of parties to celebrate this time of year. Shopping for a new outfit is always good fun, but are you also shopping around for a new smile? It’s not too late, and cosmetic dentistry in Leeds could still help brighten your smile in time to celebrate the end of the year. If you’re interested in having a smile makeover, then it’s well worth looking appointment with Dr David Brown or with any of our dentist at Leeds City Dentalcare to find out exactly how we could help you. Some of the treatments are relatively quick and can be completed in just a few short weeks while others may take a little longer.

Cosmetic Dentistry LeedsTeeth Whitening
One of the easiest ways to boost your smile is to simply have your teeth whitened. This is one of our most popular cosmetic dentistry treatments, and it’s also extremely affordable and safe. We use the Nite WhiteTM tooth whitening system as it’s extremely gentle and will help to bleach out the stains on your teeth restoring them to their natural colour. It’s something that you can do in the comfort of your own home so you’re always in control of the bleaching process. You should see results within just a few days, although you may need to carry on treatment for a couple of weeks to get the type of colour you desire. It is always important to make sure you don’t over bleach your teeth as you could end up damaging them, and they won’t end up a nice bright white. Our dentist in Leeds will have discussed with you the type of results you can reasonably achieve while still maintaining a healthy smile.

Dental Veneers
If you’re looking for something a little more, then you may want to consider having some of your teeth veneered. Dental veneers can be completed in approximately 3 visits to Leeds City Dental care, and they are ideal for hiding small imperfections in your teeth such as cracks and stains or minor chips. They’re also a great way of modifying teeth that are too small, or which might be slightly rotated or sticking out.

Composite Fillings
Perhaps you generally happy with the colour and shape of your teeth, but would like a bit of a boost to your smile. In this case it might be worth seeing if any of your fillings need renewing, especially if they’re right at the front of the mouth and have become stained. Renewing old fillings can make quite a difference, and at the same time you’re protecting your dental health as old fillings can leak, letting in bacteria that could create decay.

Even a Scale and Polish Can Make a Difference
If your teeth are generally in great condition, then even something as simple as having a hygiene appointment can make a difference. Having your teeth scaled and polished can give your smile a boost, lifting old stains and brightening your smile. For some people that will be all that’s required, and again this is something that will protect your oral health as oral hygiene appointments are important for keeping your teeth and gums in top condition.

Tooth Coloured Fillings at your cosmetic dentist in Leeds

In the past amalgam fillings used to be placed as standard, and at the time they were an extremely good choice. However things have moved on since then and nowadays most people would choose to have cosmetic tooth coloured fillings that are made from composite resin. Obviously the huge advantage of choosing these composite resin fillings over amalgam fillings is that they are virtually undetectable. One of the major problems with amalgam fillings that they can make it appear as if your teeth are stained or discoloured, and they do create dark areas in the mouth that can look quite unsightly.

Dentist LeedsIn contrast tooth coloured fillings blend in beautifully with your natural teeth, and modern materials mean they are able to be used to replace quite large areas of decay. In the past this wasn’t really the case and composite resin tend to be kept for fillings right in the front of the mouth. This is because the materials simply weren’t strong enough to withstand the pressure created through biting and chewing. Nowadays it’s a much healthier alternative to having amalgam fillings, and another huge benefit is the way the material reacts with your natural teeth as it will not flex or expand and contract at a different rate. This was another problem with amalgam fillings, as whenever you ate or drank something hot or cold this caused the amalgam to expand or contract, and as a result it could end up causing tiny fractures in your teeth, weakening the remaining tooth structure.

If you still have older style amalgam fillings in your mouth, then it’s probably nothing to be worried about as long as they are still functional. This material has been in use for more than 150 years and consists of several different metals which include tin, copper and silver, but around half the weight of an amalgam filling is made up of mercury. The whole reason for using mercury is that it’s a very good material for binding all the metals together, and it’s part of the reason why amalgam is such a hard wearing and durable material. But the mercury content is something that does concern many people even though it’s considered safe for use. Leeds City Dentalcare, your friendly cosmetic dentist in Leeds, doesn’t necessarily recommend removing old amalgam fillings that are still viable, but we do find that many people are choosing more aesthetically pleasing cosmetic resin fillings as their replacements.

Composite resin is a very versatile material, and it’s perfect for restoring small to medium-size areas of decay. It may not always be suitable for large areas of decay, as the tooth is likely to need more support. This is something that could be provided in the form of a crown, or we may recommend having an inlay or onlay. This is something that we can do for you in just one visit if you choose to opt for a CEREC restoration. The process uses computerised technology to produce beautiful restorations that are milled from a single block of material, and all without the need for any dental impressions. Dr David Brown or another of our dentists at our Leeds surgery will be able to discuss all the options with you, if or when you need a filling, or an older filling replaced.

What are Chalky Teeth? Advice from your dentist in Leeds

If you’re a parent who cares about your child’s dental health, then you’re probably patting yourself on the back for looking after their teeth through making sure they have a balanced diet, and that they brush thoroughly every day. But even if you do all this, there’s still a chance that your children’s teeth may not turn out quite right, as events during a child’s early development can affect the way teeth are formed, leading to them developing something that is called chalky teeth.

Cosmetic Dentistry LeedsWhat are the Risk Factors for Chalky Teeth?
This might be something that happens if your child was born prematurely or if they suffered with infections or high fevers as a toddler, and which required antibiotics. One of the possible side effects from these events is that the teeth could end up looking chalky. These teeth are more likely to be weak, are more vulnerable to developing cavities, and your child may notice they are more sensitive to hot and cold foods. In addition the teeth that are affected by this condition may become discoloured. The proper medical term for this condition is hypomineralisation or enamel hyperplasia. This means the hard outer coating of the tooth, the enamel, is lacking in minerals required to strengthen it, protecting it against decay. It’s something that can affect your child’s baby teeth, or their permanent teeth. Those most at risk include children who were born approximately 3 months prematurely, or who had a low birth weight. At this time the tooth enamel is still forming while the baby is still in the womb, and if it is delivered to soon then the enamel formation can be disrupted.

Another problem with enamel hyperplasia is that it can increase the risk of baby bottle tooth decay, something that can lead to early tooth loss. Even though baby teeth do eventually fall out, it’s worth remembering that their molars need to remain in place until the age of 10 to 12 which is when the permanent teeth will be ready to erupt.

If you think your child might fall into this category, then it’s well worth mentioning this when you bring them in for a check-up with Dr David Brown, your dentist in Leeds City Dentalcare. If we think your child is affected then there are various things that we can do to help, as for instance we can provide fluoride treatments to help strengthen the enamel and which will help to make the teeth less sensitive to temperature changes. If the teeth are discoloured then it might be possible to use various measures to remove some of the discoloration, or we might suggest covering the tooth in a protective filling material. The important thing is to try to protect the tooth so it is not completely lost to decay.

It’s something that might sound alarming, but with proper dental care it can be managed. It’s also important to make sure your child’s oral hygiene is always the very best it can be, and to keep an eye on their diet to make sure they don’t have too much sugar. Most incidences of tooth decay in children are preventable, but if your child is at risk of having this condition then you may want to take extra measures early on in their life.

A Quick Overview of Cosmetic Dentistry Treatments

A person’s smile is very individual, and people have very different ideas as to what constitutes a beautiful smile. Some feel that teeth should look natural, but perhaps a little whiter, while others feel that teeth should be perfectly straight and even, or that the shape of their teeth needs altering. Others are even unhappy about their gum line, and may feel that they show too much gum when smiling, or that it looks uneven. These are all things that can be corrected through having cosmetic dentistry in Leeds, but how do all these treatments work?

Dentist LeedsTeeth Whitening

This is one of the most commonly requested cosmetic dentistry in Leeds City Dentalcare, and we supply patients with custom-made whitening trays for use at home. We feel this is the most effective and gentle way of whitening teeth, and it achieves very good results within just a couple of weeks.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding can be used to repair minor imperfections in teeth, for instance a chipped front tooth can be bonded with composite resin and can give very good results in just one visit. This is the conservative and cost-effective treatment.

Replacing Old Amalgam Fillings

Replacing amalgam fillings with more cosmetically pleasing composite resin fillings can lift a smile with minimal cost. If your fillings have been in place for several years then it’s likely they’re coming to the end of their natural life and would need replacing anyway.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are an extremely popular cosmetic dentistry treatment and to cover the front surface of the tooth, replacing a very thin layer of tooth enamel. They can alter the size, shape and colour of the tooth and can be used to restore areas that have been worn down, creating a more youthful smile.

Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain crowns can be used to replace larger areas of tooth structure that may have been lost due to trauma or due to decay. Crowns are used when there’s not enough tooth structure to support a filling or other type of restoration, and they cover the entire tooth. In today’s all ceramic porcelain crowns look extremely good and maybe recommended by our dentist in Leeds for anyone who is looking for the very best cosmetic dental results.

Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic treatment is often requested to correct the appearance of teeth, and today’s orthodontic systems can gently and effectively move the teeth into the correct position. Even better, most are quite invisible so there’s no need to worry about wearing a mouth full of metal. Some orthodontic braces are more cosmetically oriented than others, and they only concentrate on moving the teeth that are visible whenever you smile or speak to others. In spite of this, any thoughts of orthodontic treatment is likely to have a beneficial effect on your oral health, as you should find it much easier to clean your teeth properly.

The list above is a pretty comprehensive but not complete, as missing teeth can detract from a smile. Dr David Brown is able to replace lost teeth with dental implants, and if you’ve lost teeth then this is a treatment that’s well worth exploring.

Will Your New Filling Be Direct, Semi Direct, or Indirect?

Most people have at least one filling, and these do need renewing every so often as the edges can begin to crumble, allowing the filling to leak, and let in decay causing bacteria. If you have regular dental check-ups with Dr David Brown then this will be one of the things he will be looking for, and is part of the reason why dental x-rays are taken periodically. When the time comes for the filling to be replaced then you may hear the dentist in Leeds talking about indirect, direct, or even semi direct fillings, but what do all these terms mean?

Dentist LeedsThey refer to the techniques used to place a filling, and the choice of filling is something that can depend on the size and location of the decayed area, and how much of your natural tooth structure is still remaining.

Direct Fillings
These are the most common type of fillings and are placed in one visit to Leeds City Dentalcare. Direct fillings are used to replace relatively small areas of tooth structure, and are perfect for small cavities. Composite resin is placed into the cavity, and is hardened using a special light that ‘cures’ the resin. Afterwards it will be shaped and polished. The result should be a very lifelike filling that is difficult to see. Your dentist can even chose to use small increments of several different colours of resin, giving even better results.

Semi-Direct Fillings
Semi-direct filings are used to replace larger areas of decay, and are good for filling relatively large cavities. The filling can be constructed in the same way as before, but its size means that it needs to be removed from the mouth so it can be cured or fully set. Once this has happened then it can be placed back in the mouth, and can be bonded in position.

CEREC Semi-Direct Fillings
Leeds City Dentalcare is also able to offer patients a different type of semi-direct filling that is far more beautiful, and which is extremely strong, as the practice has a CEREC machine.. This can mill semi-direct fillings from a single block of porcelain, and this is something that can be done while you wait. The advantage of CEREC fillings or inlays or onlays, is that they are very hard wearing, and can be made from a huge number of different shades of porcelain, and these also come in various translucencies.

This means if your filling is relatively large, then the final result should be a beautiful filling that has the natural liveliness and translucency of a real tooth, and which will blend in extremely well with your remaining tooth structure. Another advantage is that CEREC restorations will not stain, and will stay looking good for longer. CAD/CAM technology means they are precision made, so they will fit incredibly well.

Indirect Fillings
This technique is used to replace larger areas of tooth structure, where the decay is too extensive to simply place an ordinary composite resin filling. It may be possible for you to have a CEREC filling, or your Leeds dentist may decide to send an impression of your tooth to the dental laboratory for the filling to be custom-made. The filling can be made from porcelain, or from gold alloy.

Today’s Porcelain Veneers Are Stronger and More Beautiful Than Ever before

Are you thinking about freshening up your smile this autumn? If so you might have thought about having porcelain veneers, as these are one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry in Leeds. They’ve become even more beautiful in recent years due to advances in dental technology. Nowadays the materials are stronger and more lifelike, and the dentists and technicians producing them have often undergone intensive training in cosmetic dentistry techniques. Leeds City Dental care is no exception, as the dentists in our surgery will work with you to make sure you’re satisfied with your new smile, but what exactly is a porcelain veneer?

Dentist LeedsA porcelain veneer is best described as being an extremely thin piece of porcelain that literally veneers or covers the front of your tooth. It’s custom-made to exactly fit over your tooth and his consort in such a way as to improve on it the natural appearance of your teeth. It’s usually necessary to remove a little bit of your tooth structure, but this isn’t always required depending on the size of the tooth to be veneered compared with the desired shape and size of the tooth.

Veneers can it help improve several different characteristics of your teeth including:

Colour
Multiple veneers are often used to change the colour of teeth, as teeth can gradually yellow as you get older. While teeth whitening is effective for some staining, it won’t work all the time as some stains are internal to the structure of the tooth. A porcelain veneer can be used to mask the natural colour of the tooth, making it whiter and brighter.

Shape and Size
Over the course of time teeth can become worn down, making the incisal or biting edges appear flatter. In comparison useful teeth have softer, rounded edges, and replicating these with veneers can help give you a more youthful smile. Rounded softer teeth went since everybody, as some people may prefer to have square and more masculine teeth. The simple things that can be discussed during the planning process with Dr David Brown. Some people simply have teeth that are too small for their mouth, or maybe the size and in this case the size can be adjusted with veneers. Sometimes tooth structure has been lost due to decay or trauma, and this may be able to be repaired with a veneer or it might be better to choose a crown.

Spaces and Alignment
Most people have at least one or two teeth that are slightly crooked or out of alignment, and this is something that can be corrected through using veneers. It’s a quicker fix than wearing orthodontic braces for months on end, as not everyone wants to take this route. Quite a few people will have gaps in between their teeth, and while these can add to character they can also be highly inconvenient, and it could be that a person’s smile will look better with the gaps closed or at least minimized.

Porcelain veneers are incredibly versatile, and Leeds City Dental care has a small gallery on its website showing real patients who have benefited from this treatment. If you’re interested in finding out more than it’s worth booking at consultation with a dentist in Leeds to find out more.
