Are You at Risk of Developing Gum Disease?

Many people will develop some degree of gum disease during their lifetime, but some are more at risk than others, especially at certain points in life. Gum disease is an infectious condition that affects the gums, and the early stages are called gingivitis (the gingiva is the gum membrane or tissue covering the root area of the tooth). If the early signs of gingivitis are missed or ignored there is the possibility that it will develop into periodontal disease.

The word periodontium refers to gums and all the supporting structures, including the gingiva, the sulcus which is the point at which the tooth meets the gum, the surface of the tooth root, the connective tissue holding the tooth in place, and the alveolar bone which is the bone that supports the tooth sockets and the teeth. Periodontitis can destroy these structures, resulting in the loss of teeth.

Dentist LeedsPeriodontal disease tends to affect people over the age of thirty five, but it can develop in anyone, which is why Leeds City Dentalcare is so keen on preventative dental care. People who are more at risk of developing this condition include:

  • Tobacco users or smokers
  • People who have a poor diet
  • Women during puberty, the menopause and pregnancy
  • Some people are more genetically disposed towards developing gum disease
  • Certain illnesses, in particular systemic illnesses (illnesses that affect the whole body) increase the risk
  • Certain medications prescribed to treat some conditions increase the likelihood of gum disease

Anyone who smokes is more at risk as smoking affects the gums and the alveolar bone. Smokers are more likely to have receding gums, and smoking can mask some of the early symptoms of the disease as the gums may not bleed when brushed.

The gums need a certain level of nutrients in order to stay healthy, as vitamins and minerals aid healing and help the body to fight off infections such as gum disease. Someone who does not eat well, or who is malnourished is more at risk of developing gum disease.

The hormonal changes experienced by women at certain periods during their lifetime can increase their risk. This is because these changes can increase the sensitivity of the gum tissue towards plaque bacteria (bacteria that cause gum disease), and can increase the body’s reaction, leading to more inflammation in the gums. This inflammation is the body’s way of trying to fight off infection, but can be very destructive.

Systemic illnesses such as diabetes increase the risk of periodontal disease, and make it harder for the body to fight off infection. Diabetes causes the blood vessels to narrow so they cannot transport nutrients to the gums so easily. Poorly controlled diabetes increases the amount of glucose in the saliva, providing additional food for plaque bacteria.

Some prescription medications influence the production of saliva, making the mouth drier. Dry mouth increases the risk of gum disease as saliva helps to keep the mouth clean and free from disease.

If you think you may be more at risk then it is worth talking to Dr David Brown or another of our dentist in Leeds. They will be able to advise you as to whether or not you need additional check-ups and cleanings. They can also show you the best way to look after your teeth and gums at home, so you can help avoid the risk of gum disease.

Struggling with Dentures? Ask Us about Using Dental Implant to Support Them

Dentures are a great solution for replacing missing teeth, but they are not perfect and some people do struggle with wearing them. A common problem faced by many denture wearers is that they tend to move around, and this problem can increase as the years go by. This is due to the fact that the bone in the jaw is gradually reabsorbed, and there’s less retention to keep the denture firmly in place.

Things to Try Before Opting for Dental Implants

One solution is to use denture adhesives, but these can be quite messy and expensive and may not be so good for long-term use. Another solution is to visit Leeds City Dentalcare to have your dentures checked, as it may be possible to reline them to improve the fit. It’s important to remember that dentures tend to have a shelf life of anywhere between 3 to 6 years after which time they will need replacing. However if you’d like a more permanent solution then you may want to ask Dr David Brown about using dental implants to support your dentures.

Dental Implant LeedsUsing Implants to Stabilise Dentures

Perhaps you thought implants were too expensive, especially to replace a complete arch of missing teeth, but using them to stabilise a denture can be surprisingly affordable. This is because an implant supported denture only requires a few dental implants, as it is all down to the placement. When properly placed these few implants will spread the load of the denture so you will be able to eat and chew a greater variety of foods with much more confidence and enjoyment.

If you currently have digestive problems then you could find these improve as being able to chew your food properly will enable it to be digested more thoroughly. Another huge advantage is that you will feel confident in accepting social situations that involve food, as many people with dentures that are difficult to retain will actively avoid having to share meals with others.

Implant Supported Dentures are Easy to Care For

Implant supported dentures clip onto special attachments fitted to the implants so you can be assured they will not move or slip and you will not need to use messy denture adhesives to hold them in place. They can be removed for cleaning, and it is important that you take out your dentures every night and thoroughly clean them and the dental implant in Leeds. It is especially important to clean your implants properly as otherwise the gum tissue surrounding them could become infected, a condition that is called peri-implantitis. This is similar to gum disease and can be just as serious, but can easily be avoided through good oral hygiene.

A lower denture can be supported on just four implants, while an upper denture will require a few more, anywhere from six to eight. Most people use this type of system to secure lower dentures as these tend to be the most problematic, but it is especially nice for anyone who hates wearing an upper denture due to having a strong gag reflex. Upper implant supported dentures do not cover the upper palate, making them comfortable and easy to wear. The upper palate also has taste buds, so uncovering it can lead to a greater ability to taste food properly.

This treatment isn’t for everyone, but if you currently struggle with dentures then it is worth contacting our surgery to make an appointment to talk to one of our dentist in Leeds and to find out more.

Why Replace Lost Teeth with Dentures?

Using Dentures to Replace Missing Teeth Is Cost-Effective and Easy

Dentures are a very easy and cost-effective way to replace missing teeth. They can help to restore a person’s ability to eat food, and can restore facial appearance. Today’s modern dentures are nothing like your granny used to wear as they use teeth that are designed to look very natural, and the denture can be constructed so it doesn’t look too perfect and artificial. Dentures consist of an acrylic base that is gum coloured, and the acrylic comes in several different shades so it can be closely matched to your existing gum tissue.

Cosmetic Dentistry LeedsThe artificial teeth also come in lots of different designs and shapes and colours, and there are varying degrees of quality. Get cosmetic dentistry in Leeds City Dentalcare where dentures are use the very best quality teeth that are constructed in Liechtenstein. Some dentures will include a cobalt chrome framework that is designed to strengthen the denture without adding extra bulk.

Dentures can be made to replace a single tooth, or to replace every tooth in your mouth. Dentures that only replace a few teeth are called partial dentures, while those made to replace complete arches of teeth are called full dentures.

Attention to Detail Ensures Your Finished Denture Will Look and Feel Natural

The process for having a denture made and fitted is very straightforward but you will need to arrange quite a few appointments with Dr David Brown or another of our dentist at Leeds surgery. This is because it’s necessary to take precise impressions and measurements of your mouth before your denture can even be constructed. Initially your denture will be made using pink coloured wax to represent the acrylic base and this is used to support the denture teeth that will be used in the finished denture.

One of our dentists in Leeds will need to try in this wax denture to make sure it fits properly and that the teeth are in the correct position. They will also check that it restores your facial features to the correct dimensions and height. It’s really important to get this stage right, as the next step is to replace the wax with acrylic which cannot be so easily altered. Sometimes it might be necessary to send the wax denture back to our laboratory for alterations, and although this might seem laborious it really does pay dividends in the end.

The next step will be to have your denture fitted, and we may need to make some small adjustments to ensure it fits comfortably. It’s not unusual for it to require adjustments some days or even a week or two after the initial fitting, but these additional appointments are included in the cost of your denture.

We Can’t Make You Faberge Dentures but We Do Our Best to Ensure You’re Happy with Your New Teeth

It was recently reported that an aristocrat’s remains were discovered in a church near St. Petersburg in Russia. What’s interesting about this particular discovery is that the aristocrat had dentures made by Faberge and which were constructed out of platinum and gold. Leeds City Dentalcare can’t provide you with such extravagantly fabulous dentures, but we can make dentures that will look very natural and which won’t cost a king’s ransom.

When Is It Time to Get Worried about Thumb Sucking?

Many young children suck their thumb or fingers as it can be a very comforting behaviour that can help soothe them to sleep, or which simply keeps them occupied when they’re feeling a bit bored. It’s estimated that about 75% of young children will begin sucking their thumb or their fingers before they reach the age of one.

Thumb sucking isn’t so much of a problem with very young children, and most soon grow out of this behaviour. However it can become more of a problem if the habit persists when their permanent teeth begin erupting. By this stage most children will have quit thumb sucking, and only 20% will continue sucking their thumb past the age of seven.

Orthodontics LeedsDental Problems Associated with Sucking Thumbs or Fingers

If the problem does persist beyond this page then it is quite likely to create dental problems, and is something that we do see occurring in younger patients who visit Leeds City Dentalcare. The action of sucking a thumb or finger can lead to the upper teeth becoming pushed outwards, while the action of resting a thumb or finger on the lower teeth can gradually pushed them backwards. This can result in the child developing an abnormal bite that would eventually require orthodontics in Leeds City Dentalcare. Another thing to bear in mind about the problems created through thumb sucking is that it can make it difficult for a child to enunciate S sounds clearly. Prolonged thumb sucking can also create calluses on the thumbs or fingers, or may result in the skin on these fingers becoming chapped and sore.

Helping Your Child to Stop Thumb sucking

If you want to help your child break the habit of sucking their thumb and then there are various things you can do, but it’s important to make sure they are involved in the process, and that you reward any progress they make. These include making a progress chart that can be filled in by you both, and letting your child pick out some colourful stickers that can be added when they have managed to go a certain length of time without sucking their thumb. Some slip ups are inevitable, so include your child in the discussions as to how many are allowed within a given timeframe.

Thumb sucking can be quite a tricky habit to eliminate, and if your child is having a lot of difficulty then you may want to purchase some of the bitter tasting liquid used to stop nail biting. It is important to praise your child for their progress and to continue positively reinforcing their new behaviour. Another thing that can be helpful is to be aware of anything that triggers thumb sucking, and to try to eliminate these triggers or to replace them with something more appropriate. It can take several weeks of concerted effort to help your child break this habit, but it is well worth the effort.

If thumb sucking becomes prolonged or ingrained that it can become even more difficult to quit this habit, and it’s something that some people will continue doing well into adult hood. It can lead to the teeth becoming more overcrowded or crooked, and this can increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. These are conditions that will require treatment from Dr David Brown or another dentist in Leeds, and gum disease in particular can be particularly harmful to oral health and general health.

What to Expect When Your Baby is Teething

Your baby’s first tooth is definitely a milestone worth marking, but the transition from a gummy smile to a mouthful of lovely white teeth can take quite some time to complete. Some babies seem to sail through the whole teething process without experiencing any symptoms while others may exhibit signs of discomfort. Typical symptoms of teething include:

  • Drooling which may mean they develop a facial rash
  • Sucking or biting on toys or their fingers due to the pressure in the gums
  • Your baby’s gums may look swollen or sore
  • Your baby may be more reluctant to feed
  • They might have more difficulty getting to sleep than normal
  • They might simply seem out of sorts and may cry more than normal

Dentist LeedsMost symptoms of teething will soon disappear once the tooth breaks through the gums, but if you notice other signs, such as diarrhoea or fever, then it is worth contacting Leeds City Dentalcare for advice, or you should speak to your family doctor. It might also be worth doing this if teething seems to be making them particularly uncomfortable.

Things to try when your baby is teething include:

  • Giving them a chilled teething ring as this can help to relieve some pressure on the gums but don’t use anything that is frozen as this could be harmful
  • You could also try applying gentle pressure to your baby’s gums using a clean finger or a moistened flannel, just for a couple of minutes
  • Some babies find a bottle is comforting, but it’s best to make sure it doesn’t contain a sugary substance such as formula or juice that might damage the new teeth and to stick to just plain water
  • Making sure you try any drool before it can cause a rash will help keep them comfortable
  • If they seem in pain then using age appropriate painkillers might help

It’s also possible to buy various remedies and gels that can be applied directly to your baby’s gums. Some experts feel these remedies aren’t particularly effective, so if you’d like further advice on which products may work then contact our Leeds surgery.

Looking after Your Baby’s First Teeth

It’s important to look after these first teeth, and to clean them thoroughly twice a day using a soft baby toothbrush. Initially you can clean them using just plain water, and it’s best to ask Dr David Brown or another of our dentists in our Leeds surgery when you should begin using toothpaste. At this stage you can book your child’s first appointment with Leeds City Dentalcare.

Thinking about Freshening up Your Looks with Botox? Read on

Cosmetic dentistry in Leeds can do a lot for the look of your smile, and even a relatively simple and inexpensive treatment such as teeth whitening can make a huge difference. But while your smile may look fresh and youthful do the rest of your facial features matchup? This is where Botox can really help. Botox utilises the muscle paralysing qualities of botulinum toxin and it is widely used around the world, and not only for cosmetic applications. However Botox injections are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures amongst those anxious to have a fresher look, but who don’t want to do anything radical, such as plastic surgery.

What is Botox Best used for?Cosmetic Dentistry Leeds

Botox treats the facial wrinkles caused by the contractions of muscles used for facial expressions. It’s most widely used for softening crow’s feet around the corners of the eyes, and for softening the glabellar lines which are the two lines that tends to develop in between the eyebrows, and if you frown into the mirror you’ll see them quite clearly. If you have these types of wrinkles then the dentist at Leeds City Dentalcare can help through the administration of carefully placed injections. The whole procedure probably takes around half an hour to complete and is a relatively inexpensive way to improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles on your face.

Botox is a neuromuscular toxin and works best on the lines that are regarded as being “active” or those that have only recently formed. Dr David Brown or another dentist at our Leeds surgery will treat specific areas to artistically alter your facial expression without creating that frozen look that some people associate with badly applied or overused Botox. When used correctly you should be able to show your emotions in your face, as the only intention is to make subtle changes that will help prevent lines forming while still creating a natural appearance.

What is the Difference between Botox and Dermal Fillers?

Leeds City Dentalcare also offers dermal fillers and this works in a slightly different way as they are best used on more established wrinkles. They can cosmetically alter the appearance of soft tissues, for example creating a plumper look to the lips. Your initial consultation will be to help you decide whether Botox or dermal fillers are more appropriate, or if you’ll achieve the best results by using a combination of both treatments. Both Botox and dermal fillers are extremely safe, and our dentists in Leeds only ever use the minimum amount necessary which is far below the recommended guidelines.

Botox is More Than Just Cosmetic

Most people think of Botox as only having cosmetic applications when in fact it’s a very versatile substance. We can also use it to help treat severe headaches or migraines. It works by helping to reduce sensitivity towards headaches, and its muscle relaxing properties help reduce tightness in specific areas that would have been identified as the trigger points. The frequency of migraines can be reduced through receiving injections in muscles that normally become constricted in migraine sufferers. If you currently suffer from painful headaches, and are fed up with trying to deal with the unpleasant side effects which can include nausea, stomach upsets and shoulder and neck pain, then why not ask our Leeds surgery for an assessment? We would only recommend this treatment if we think it will provide a real benefit for you.

Could Dental Injections Be Replaced with a Nasal Spray?

It is certainly beginning to sound that way, as American scientists have recently developed a new nasal spray and it could eventually replace the need for needles. The nasal spray is called Kovacaine Mist and has already been extensively trialled. The results look promising as some 83% of patients didn’t require any further anaesthetic. The level of anaesthesia provided is sufficient to perform restorative dental procedures. The spray is currently being tested by the US Food and Drug Administration, and the product could receive final approval by as early as next year.

This should make things a little easier for people who are a little anxious about visiting the dentist as it’s estimated up to three quarters of the population feel some sort of dental fear. However we understand that some people simply find it difficult to even walk through the door, and that a new nasal spray might not be enough to make a difference.

Do you feel Nervous about Visiting the Dentist? Let Us Help You

In fact we have been successfully treating nervous patients for years, and it’s not uncommon for our dentist in Leeds to see people who haven’t felt able to visit the dentist for decades. We don’t judge, and would never tell anybody off for not seeing the dentist sooner as we do realise how overwhelming it can seem.

You’ll find our modern surgery is clean and comfortable and our waiting room is designed to put you at your ease. But our main weapon is simply good communication. The dentists in our Leeds surgery will take the time to listen to your concerns, and will answer all your questions in language that is easy to understand as we won’t try and baffle you with dental terminology.

Your First Visit Is Just a Check-up

It’s important to remember that the first visit is merely an examination and that you won’t have to face any treatment. This is simply a chance for you to come familiar with our surgery and with our dentists in Leeds, so you feel more comfortable about receiving treatment. If you do have any dental issues then we can work out a treatment plan that suits you. Our aim is to help you regain your dental health, and afterwards to help you maintain it through regular dental care appointments combined with good oral care at home, so you have a smile you can be proud of.

Once you have regained your oral health then it you should find it is perfectly straightforward to maintain it, or you may even want to think about improving it through having cosmetic dentistry in Leeds. The value of having healthy teeth should never be underestimated but we never lose sight of the person behind the smile.

Keeping Kids Teeth Healthy During Summer

School is out and those long lazy days of summer are upon us. It is little wonder that many children regard this as one of the best times of the year, but the reverse may be true for their teeth. Daily routines can quickly go to pot, and unfortunately tooth brushing and flossing can be a casualty, as it is all too easy for kids to forget or to ignore the importance of twice daily brushing and flossing.

So What Can Busy Parents Do To Help?Dentist Leeds

Leeds City Dentalcare suggests trying to get your kids to stick to a regular schedule, even though that is easier said than done. Try to make sure your children are aware of the need for great dental health, and explain to them how it can affect their overall health. You can also help by making sure you set a great example to your kids, and that you practise what you preach.

This can be a great time to book check-ups with Dr David Brown for the whole family, and to schedule professional cleanings, especially if you have been too busy to have a check-up recently. Our dentist in Leeds will be able to check your kid’s teeth to make sure there are no cavities forming, and they can also advise you on the use of preventative dental care treatments, in particular dental sealants.

Dental sealants are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, and help to protect these vulnerable areas against decay. The chewing surfaces are especially susceptible as they contain lots of little grooves and fissures that help make it easier to grind up food, but which can be tricky to clean thoroughly. Dental sealants are best applied as soon as your children’s adult or permanent teeth erupt as they can only be applied to healthy teeth that don’t yet have any fillings.

Stock Your House with Healthy Snacks

Another problem with the school holidays is that children tend to eat a little less healthily, and may want to indulge in ice-cream, crisps and other treats. You can help by removing some of this temptation and through stocking your cupboards with more tooth friendly snacks such as fruits, vegetables, and cheese and sugar free yoghurts. Cutting back on fizzy drinks, chocolate biscuits and sweets will help their dental health and their overall health.

Allowing them to eat lots of foods that are bad for their teeth will mean their mouths will contain more sugar, and this is the most accessible food source for plaque bacteria. This will enable these bacteria to thrive and multiply, especially if oral hygiene is somewhat lax. It is even worse if they like to snack a lot in between meals, as plaque bacteria produce acids as they feed, and these acids will attack the tooth enamel, softening it and weakening it, making it more susceptible towards tooth decay. As the plaque bacteria congregate in the mouth they will begin to irritate the gum tissues, and this could even lead towards the development of gum disease. Gum disease is taken very seriously in our Leeds surgery, and is one of the reasons why we advocate preventative dental care so strongly. All of these preventative measures will not stop your child from having fun, but they could save them a lot of pain and money further down the line.

Why Consider Orthodontics as Part of a Smile Makeover?

If you are considering having a smile makeover then you have probably thought about, or even investigated popular treatments such as tooth whitening, veneers, or perhaps white fillings or all-ceramic crowns. All these treatments can do a lot to help perfect a smile, but orthodontics in Leeds can be a very useful part of a treatment plan.

Take a More Conservative Approach to a Smile Makeover with Orthodontics

Using braces before you have other treatments can be a more conservative approach, and could help you to save money in the long run. For instance having your teeth straightened at Leeds City Dentalcare could mean you subsequently require fewer veneers to create a straighter smile.

Veneers are excellent at correcting teeth that are slightly crooked, but they do need the teeth to be modified slightly, as a small amount of enamel needs to be removed from the surfaces due to receive the veneers. Even though this amount is minimal, these teeth will always need to be protected with veneers. The average life for a veneer is approximately ten years so if you can minimise the number required then you will save money in the longer term.

Some people may still be put off having orthodontic treatment as it can conjure up images of having to wear a mouthful of metal, or having unsightly ‘train tracks’ attached to the front of the teeth for months on end. While it is true that traditional braces are still used, there are many more modern systems that are virtually invisible. Dentists are using Orthodontic system called the Inman Aligner in Leeds City Dentalcare.

What is the Inman Aligner?

The Inman Aligner is a removable brace that is virtually invisible. It uses a combination of titanium nickel springs that exert forces on an inner and outer bow. The bows are thin pieces of wire, and one fits across the outer surfaces of the teeth, while the other is located on the inner surfaces of the teeth, and they create opposing forces to gently but effectively move the teeth back into position. This system is ideal for correcting teeth that are crooked or protruding, and can achieve results within just a few weeks.

The brace is completely removable, so it is easy to clean your teeth normally during treatment. Even though it is not completely invisible, it is very unobtrusive, and needs to be in place for such as short while that most people do not find this a problem. It does need to be worn for approximately twenty hours each day for the results to be realised within the predicted timeframe. The actual brace can feel a little strange at first, but most people soon become accustomed to wearing it. You will need to return to see Dr David Brown, or another dentist at our Leeds surgery every few weeks so we can ensure your teeth are moving as predicted.

This brace won’t be the right choice for everyone. Booking a consultation at Leeds City Dentalcare will allow our dentists to assess your bite so they can see whether or not it will be effective for your needs. The range of movement provided by this brace is fairly limited which is one reason why the results are so quick, but it could just be a more conservative approach to gaining a perfect smile, without the need for more lengthy orthodontic treatment.

Scientists Say Our Teeth are No Longer Fit for Purpose

While some creatures are lucky enough to be blessed with an endless supply of teeth throughout their lifetime, humans have to make do with just two sets. It’s something that scientists have been investigating for a very long time in the quest to see if humans could somehow regrow that elusive third or even fourth set. They have even said that our teeth are no longer fit for purpose, and put this down to the fact that life expectancy is getting longer, and having a limited supply of teeth isn’t ideal with today’s modern diet.

It’s been suggested that one day in the future humans could evolve to grow beaks, something that will be a far more robust and practical but which seems a little strange right now. Of course this is something that will take millions of years and the race is still on it to see if human teeth can somehow be regenerated. Dr Fraser, a biologist at Sheffield University recently identified the cells responsible for tooth regeneration which have been rather quaintly named the tooth fairy cells, and it’s hoped that scientists will eventually discover how these cells work so they can apply the technique to humans. Unfortunately it’s estimated that it will be at least 50 years before this technology is available, and even then it might not be possible to produce perfect teeth or teeth that are in the correct alignment. Fifty years is quite some time away, so most of us will have to stick to trying to make our natural teeth last for as long as we can, and this is where Leeds City Dentalcare can help.

Preventative Dental Care Will Help Your Teeth Last Longer

Preventative dental care can do a lot to help and is easy to do. Regular check-ups with Dr David Brown, combined with professional cleanings will help to keep your teeth and gums free from disease. Gum disease is a major cause of tooth loss and is very common, but it doesn’t need to be. The early stages of gum disease can be easy to miss or ignore, but regular dental care with a dentist in Leeds will ensure the symptoms are picked up quickly when the condition is simple to treat.

Cosmetic Dental Treatments Will Give You the Smile You Really Want

Being able to grow perfect teeth might be a very long way off, but modern dental technology can give you the smile you really want in the here and now. Our Leeds surgery uses all the latest and most up-to-date techniques to provide our patients with quality cosmetic dental treatments, including teeth whitening, all-ceramic crowns and bridges and veneers.

Already Lost Teeth? We Can Replace Them with Dental Implants

Until we can regrow our own teeth, dental implants are the next best thing. Tried and tested technology is used to replace your natural tooth root with a titanium post that can be used to support a crown, bridge or to stabilise a denture. Dental implants in Leeds are more affordable than you might imagine, and can replace your teeth in a way that looks very natural.

Our natural teeth may have difficulty keeping up with the rigours of modern living, but dentistry has evolved tremendously over the last few years, and you’d be amazed at how good restorative and cosmetic dental treatments can be.
